COMMUNITY IMPACT
Bridging Virginia’s solutions have tangible stakeholder impact. Since launching in 2020, we have facilitated over $1,300,000 of affordable financing.
“[This loan] was the sustaining lifeline that we needed to be able to bridge inventory, supply and demand and be able to stay afloat to make it to the next quarter.”
A Black-Owned Beauty Hub Builds Community
Marie’s Hair and Nail Supply
As a long-time resident of Richmond, Tawann Scott knows it can be hard to find the right beauty products, especially for the African American Community. After dreaming of being a business owner for years, Tawann took the leap in 2021 to start Marie’s Hair and Nail Supply. By selling a diverse array of products both natural and chemically processed hair, Marie’s fills an untapped market in Richmond’s Southside and Northside communities. Tawann’s determination, combined with support and capital from Richmond’s small business ecosystem, has turned Marie’s into a flourishing beauty supply hub.
Tawann’s entrepreneurial journey began with challenges in finding products for her textured hair, compounded by family expenses and the economic impact of COVID-19. After persistent planning, she opened Marie’s with the help of family and friends. At her grand opening, Tawann connected with The Metropolitan Business League (MBL) and the Capital Access Hub, securing a loan from KIVA and additional funding through Bridging Virginia and a Capital SBDC advisor.
“In my head I got a late start because I was almost 50 when I started my business, and I know a lot of people that say oh, you have to do it early. But I am a walking testament right now that you don't have to be young. You can start when you start- just give it a shot, be willing to ask for help, and step into faith.”
With the support of MBL, Bridging Virginia, and SBDC, Tawann expanded her loan and continues to grow Marie’s offerings. By stocking local products and renting space to stylists, she aims to give back to her community.
A Hampton Roads Home for Inclusive Style
Edgewood Outfitters
In 2021 best friends Karen Hampton and Gabrielle Mueller opened the doors to Edgewood Outfitters, a size-inclusive boho-inspired boutique. For Karen and Gabrielle, opening the business was about more than just entrepreneurship. Combining a love for fashion and creativity, Edgewood Outfitters also gives the friends a chance to uplift other women in the community.
After filing for their LLC in 2018, they spent two years preparing to offer a full range of sizes, a rarity among brick-and-mortar stores. Edgewood Outfitters opened in November 2020 and by 2022, the boutique had outgrown its initial space and moved to a larger location. Seeking to capitalize on their growth, Karen and Gabrielle approached Bridging Virginia, inspired by another client’s success story.
“For us it's all about making people feel confident. If you're dressed good, then it'll make you feel good for the rest of the day.”
With Bridging Virginia’s support, Karen and Gabrielle secured a loan that fueled Edgewood’s growth, leading to a 50% increase in sales within a year. The founders are now planning to open a second location.
